Guangdong Province began rice variety improvement from 1920s and a large number of excellent rice varieties widely planted in Guangdong Province and even in southern China. More importantly, Guangdong Province broke a new ground of rice dwarfing breeding in China and contributed to increasing rice production in southern China.Hainan is a famous island as the base of off-season crop breeding in China.It was originally an administrative district of Guangdong Province and became a new province in 1988.There was record of rice varieties in Hainan Province from 1990.Since then, more and more new rice varieties were improved continuously.This book outlined rice cultivation regionalization and variety improvement processes in Guangdong and Hainan Provinces respectively.A total oF 442 rice varieties in Guangdong and 93 rice varieties in Hainan were described in this book.Among the varieties in Guangdong Province，22 were bred from 1950s to mid-1970s with large planting areas or playing important roles in rice breeding as the backbone parents，420 varieties were approved by the Crop Variety Approval Committee of Guangdong Province from 1978 to 2010.All varieties from Guangdong were described in detail according to the order of conventional indica rice and hybrid indica rice groups.And the varieties from Hainan were described in detail according to the order of conventional indica rice, hybrid indica rice and old variety groups.Among of them，193 varieties from Guangdong and 55 varieties from Hainan had photos of plants, spikes and grains individually, but for the other varieties there was no photos because of no seeds available or lack of information.Moreover, this book also introduced 11 famous rice breeders who made outstanding contributions to rice breeding in Guangdong Province and even in the whole country.For the convenience of readers'reference, all varieties were arranged according to the order of Chinese phonetic alphabet. At the same time, in order to facilitate readers to access simplified variety information, a variety index was attached at the end of the book, including category, approval number and variety right number etc.。
