Hunan Provence is the original place of hybrid rice. The research team of hybrid rice led by Academia Yuan Longping has made great pioneering and fruitful achievements in three-line and two-line hybrid rice and successively won the outstanding awards of the special class of the National Technological Invention Prize and the special class of the National Science and Technology Progress Prize in China.Since the success of three-line indica hybrid rice, many backbone parents of hybrid rice with strong combining ability and good comprehensive characteristics and a large number of hybrid varieties have been successfully developed in Hunan Province.The extensive application of these varieties throughout China and even in the World has made outstanding contributions to ensuring the national and even the global food security.From 1973 to 2014，there were 569 male sterile rice lines and hybrid rice varieties registered and released by the Crop Variety Approval Committee of Hunan Province.This book selected and described in detail oF ₂₈ backbone parents（CMS Line, two line male sterile and restorer lines），256 three-line hybrid varieties and 169 two-line hybrid varieties, which have played an important role in rice production in Hunan Province or have made a significant impact on rice breeding.Moreover, this book also introduced 10 famous hybrid rice breeders who made outstanding contributions to rice breeding in Hunan Province and even in the whole country.For the convenience of readers'reference, all varieties were arranged according to the order of Chinese phonetic alphabet.
